On the second Saturday of each month we’re hosting one of our local artists in store to demonstrate their artwork.

This Saturday, 11th of May we are hosting local Surface Pattern Designer Tammy de Zilva of Loopla Designs.

Tammy creates vibrant and playful designs with and eye-catching colourways which are often inspired by the vintage retro vibe of the seventies. Tammy has been featured in the book “Pattern Pulse” by local author Rachael King amongst 100’s of Australia’s top Surface Designers.

Tammy will be in store demonstrating her artistic process between 2pm and 4pm. Pop in store at any point during these hours to chat and observe!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in our Traditional Easter Egg Painting Workshops.

Tutor Elizabeth Gunko led participants through the delicate process of decorating the eggs using beeswax and dye, explaining the traditional symbols as the students worked.

In Ukrainian folklore, the Pysanky (painted egg) is said to protect the household from evil spirits and natural disasters. Each design is personalised and gifted to family and friends.

On Saturday April 13 we will have textile artist Dagmar of “Dressed by D” in store between 2-4pm.

Dagmar’s first inspiration in textile art and design came from the artisans of the Czech Republic who work with traditional linen and blueprint techniques. During her travels she discovered and was inspired by Japanese textile design techniques such as Sashiko, Boro and Katazome used with the beautiful blue of the natural dye, Indigo.
Dagmar does not use or even own a sewing machine. Instead she embellishes preloved linen garments with various hand stitched or printed patterns. As well as the Katazome resist technique Dagmar uses stamps, woodblock and screen printing. She also has an extensive collection of fabrics and buttons gathered on her travels. She takes time to design a pattern that suits the individual garment, treating each as a canvas, making them unique.

On Saturday the 25th of May, local artist and seasoned kite maker Tony Rice is welcomed in store at Forager’s Nest to demonstrate the playful art form of kite making!

During this 2-hour session, Tony will be creating a “Japanese Spinning Top Kite” using inks, bamboo paper, and string. We invite onlookers to participate if they wish, or simply watch along to learn the process.

Our next Saturday Afternoon Artist Showcase is on the 9th of March at 2pm!

On the second Saturday of every month we will have one of our local artists in store to demonstrate their creative process for the art you see at Forager’s Nest.

In this upcoming showcase we will be introducing mosaic artist Annette Macan.
Annette spent her charmed youth combing the beaches of Nauru to boost her collection of sea glass. Now, with a history of over five years of collecting, she has created with this glass to produce unique works including flower pots and sun catchers, aimed at a universal and accessible appeal so the sheer joy of creating is easily shared.
The Creative Glass Guild of Queensland has offered continued inspiration in both techniques and design experience through their skilled tutors and diverse workshops, helping to enhance the handmade continuum.

Come visit Forager’s Nest from 2pm - 4pm on Saturday 9 March, to watch Annette in her creative process.

Have you ever wanted to design your own fabric? Learn with Tammy from Loopla how to create a repeat pattern by hand in this practical Brisbane workshop.

In this workshop, you will get one metre of cotton poplin fabric to print your own personalised design on.
The workshop will run for three hours and will cover the following:

• The basics of surface design
• The principles of design
• Pattern types
• How to create a repeating pattern with pen and paper

After the class, the design will be digitalised and printed onto the fabric by Tammy. Then, you can take home your personalised fabric, ready to show off to your friends and family!

Our Saturday Afternoon Artist Showcase returns for 2024!

On the second Saturday of every month we will have one of our local artists in store to demonstrate their artwork.
First cab off the rank is Bettina making giant paper roses.

Bettina, a natural forager, specialises in teaching how to make art with easily sourced and sustainable materials, proving art is available for everyone. Her favourite materials are garden trimmings and windfall; however in this case she is working with tissue paper.

Bettina will be in store between 2 - 4 pm this Saturday, the 10th of February. There will also be flowers available to purchase in case you want a REALLY BIG Bouquet for your Valentine.

It’s our last ‘Weekend Meet The Maker’ of the year!

Next Saturday we will be joined by paper artist Joanna Faber. You are welcome to come in store and view Joanna demonstrate how she uses her handmade banana fibre paper to create bird ornaments!

Joanna Faber as Fabe’s Folios is a Papermaker, Photographer & Printmaker who enjoys travelling, currently capturing Flora & Bird imagery; this is then digitally printed at home on my Brisbane Blend of botanic fibres with recycled paper for cards and framed works. It also includes collecting fallen leaves for her eco-dyeing Botanic prints in Eco Shadows.

Meet The Maker Showcase

This Saturday Dec 9th, along with Dagmar Baker, ceramicist Martha Zettler will be in store to chat and demonstrate surface designs for her vases.

Growing up in Germany, Martha spent 40 years in South Africa, before arriving in Australia 10 years ago.
Martha began her ceramic career in South Africa, and whilst studying ceramics at the University of Natal, she specialised in porcelain and bone china.
Throughout her career she has experimented with abstract geometric pieces, working in mainly black and white. She now enjoys using blues and greens throughout her work, influenced by the colours around her.

If you’d like to see Martha work on her ceramics, come in to Forager’s Nest between 2pm and 4pm Saturday the 9th!

Tricia loves working with all types of textiles, exploring their tactile qualities and playing with colour combinations, using a wide variety of techniques. Tricia is passionate about calligraphy, and often uses letters, words and symbols as the inspiration to create hangings, artist books, sculptures and wearable art.

Weekend Meet The Maker Showcase
This Saturday Dec 2nd, multi-media artist Zela Bissett will be in store to chat and demonstrate!

Zela works with pure wool to create mini-artworks in the form of wearable brooches. On Saturday, she will be demonstrating how she combines her materials to make each brooch a unique mixture of colour and texture. On the day Zela will bring a range of colours to enable some bespoke brooches to be created.
As well as working with wool, Zela is also a talented potter, paper maker and author. Her two books, “Melly and the Billy”, and “Yoshio and the Magic Bowl” are available for purchase in store.

Glass Box Mosaics by Eva Jewkes, featuring “Dancing Fuchsias” and “My Garden Rose”. Now available online and in store.

Having completed her Bachelor of Photography at the Queensland College of Art in 2015, Eva found a love of shape and colour that went beyond the photograph, when she completed several local mosaic workshops. Glass became her muse given its contrary characteristics of strength, fragility and danger. Using her own photographs, Eva develops each scene by carefully selecting glass that both suits and enhances her selected subject. Each glass fragment is hand ground allowing the finished piece to have a slightly textured finish, where it is then carefully grouted, sealed and framed for maximum durability and of course, safety.

Meet The Maker Showcase

This Saturday Nov 25th, along with Barbara Bakker, jewellery maker and weaver Aki Lockhart @stringandwire will be in store to chat and demo her intricate Mizuhiki jewellery!

Originally from Japan and now living locally in Brisbane, Aki Lockhart has been making hand woven jewellery since 2017.
Aki specialises in Mizuhiki, an ancient Japanese art-form of knot-tying, as well as a diverse range of other weaving techniques including random weave and coiling.
Amongst her jewellery you will find materials ranging from rattan and Mizuhiki cord, to natural stone and hammered brass. Aki hand-dyes all her rattan with coffee, or raw indigo dye derived from a small Indigo plant in her own garden!

Aki focuses on producing designs that are eye-catching, yet simple, and finds great happiness in seeing people wear and enjoy her jewellery.
You can find Aki’s jewellery at Forager’s Nest, and various markets around Brisbane.

Barbara is a textile artist known for her colourful and whimsical basket creations. Her work combines fabric, string, rope, sticks and beads to produce visually striking and emotionally resonant pieces that have captured the hearts of local shoppers at Forager’s Nest.

Born and raised in Brisbane, Barbara’s passion for basket making has been a self-guided exploration, leading to a unique artistic style – decorating each piece with sticks or leaves foraged from bush near Barbara’s home.

Each basket is a unique artistic expression of Barbara’s personality.

We’re featuring one artist in store at Forager’s Nest every Saturday afternoon. Each artist will be here to chat and answer questions about their process, and you’re invited to watch them create in our workshop space!

This Saturday Nov 18th, you will be meeting Artist Gerry Luhman.

Educated in the US and New Zealand, Gerry holds a B. Des Hons Degree and has successfully blended a varied career in design, university teaching, television and movie art directing within an envelope of an industrial design practice. In recent years he has been applying his talents to relief printmaking exhibiting with the Impress Printmakers Studio and The Caboolture Regional Gallery amongst others. He is a member of the Print Council of Australia and recently joined Ceramic Arts Queensland and the Caboolture Historical Village Potters where he is expanding his 3D imagination.

“My work is indicative of my love of the sea and the natural world, sometimes interrupted by the creation of crafted artefacts”.

Meet The Maker Showcase

As part of the lead up to Christmas we’re featuring one artist in store at Forager’s Nest every Saturday afternoon. Each artist will be here to chat and answer questions about their process, and you’re invited to watch them create in our workshop space!

This Saturday Nov 11th, you will be meeting expert weaver and forager Bettina.

Like all dedicated admirers of the natural world, Bettina Palmer justifies her extensive collections of foraged materials and found objects by using them as decorations. Sometimes displayed simply, just as they are found, otherwise incorporated in complex woven structures as sculptural pieces or even as wearable art in performance costume. In her projects at Forager’s Nest she has provided short workshops in various weaving techniques to produce small useful objects d’arte. For this showcase, the focus will be on introducing those techniques to make Christmas décor – straight from the garden!

This Saturday, we are showcasing the work of Eco Dye Artist Natalie Billing.

Originally from Central Western Qld, Natalie grew up around people who Mended and Made Do. Eco Dyeing is just one part of her artistic process. As well as using natural dyes to minimise her environmental impact she also aims for Zero Waste production. This means fabric prints that weren’t suitable are cut or torn up to be used in projects like coiled baskets. Smaller fabric offcuts become pin cushions. The thread off cuts, those become the stuffing for the pin cushions. Natalie doesn’t own a car, dishwasher, microwave or dryer, and the second hand TV she has been gifted isn’t plugged in. While living in the inner city she does her best to have a small carbon footprint.

What a wonderful turnout at last weekends’ Spring Hatching event!

At the beginning of June, we hatched the “Incubating” Junior Art Comp; a papier-mâché egg decorating challenge for young artists in the community to get involved in.
In the theme of Spring, participants were set out to create an artwork in any medium they desired… and we think they certainly delivered!

Last Saturday we displayed the vibrant eggs in store and presented prizes to each of the lucky artists who participated.

A special thank you to Claire Jenkinson, for sponsoring our Junior Comp, and local artists Andree Young, Tony Rice, and Erica Aptroot who created some special eggs for us to showcase.

Thank you to everyone who participated and were involved with bringing this event to life!

Featured here are the colourful ‘Symphony of Lights’, and ‘Mexico’.

Jan Garside, creator of Janga Art, (taken from the first letters of Jan's given name), was born in Wanganui New Zealand. Jan was educated and grew up in Nelson New Zealand, moving later to Australia in her 20's to work and travel.

Later returning to New Zealand with her young son, Jan studied fashion design and pattern making and began to operate her own fashion label 'Navajo House' in Christchurch and later moved her family and business to Raglan, New Zealand. Jan's interest in the arts began when she took up oil painting with a local artist in Hamilton NZ and later returned to Australia with her family where she investigated the techniques of acrylic painting.

Kate Piekutowski is an Australian contemporary printmaker and textile designer specializing in hand-painted, multi-layered etchings. As a first-generation child of Polish migrants, Piekutowski is fascinated by the concept of living between worlds; simultaneously connected and disconnected to place. Her art and designs explore her Polish ancestry and culture in the context of yearning for a sense of home in the Australian setting.

India Widdicombe, behind the canvas at Wobble Palace, creates wondrous and child-like art from her home studio in Red Hill, Brisbane. With a background in textiles, mixed media, painting and ceramics, India develops and expands on personal and collaborative projects under the alias of Wobble Palace art. With a tendency to incorporate kitsch motif, vibrant colour and 'wobbly‘ line in her work, Wobble palace houses familiar ingredients of childhood nostalgia.

Featured here are two art prints “The House” and “The Swimmer”.

Originally painted in acrylic, “The Swimmer” is reminiscent of the summers India spent plunging into the welcoming ocean off the Adelaide coast and the tranquility and silence of a good swim.

“The House” is acrylic and mixed media on canvas. This piece is an ode to India’s years pen-palling and collecting memories in her childhood bedroom in Red Hill, Brisbane.

Here at Foragers Nest Art Space we love displaying the work of artists who celebrate Australia, be it landscape, flora or fauna! Red Banksia epitomises that aesthetic we so love to promote and are very excited to have in store.

With a great love of the Australian bush, he has been
using Australian native plants, and especially their seed pods, to create highly decorative abstract art, furniture, wall-art, and home decor.
Reclaimed Australian native timber slabs (River Red Gum, Huon Pine and She-oak to name a few) are cut and re-joined to produce a “River”. This river becomes his canvas, which is then filled with intricate compositions entirely made of hundreds of Australian native plant seed pods, gum nuts, and leaves. These plants are carefully preserved and then sealed with epoxy resin.

The results are often mesmerizing and robust enough to be used as furniture or simply enjoyed as wall art.
We have just received some new smaller pieces in an updated style, with bolder colours just in time for Christmas, totally worth a look and perfect present giving size!

Leanne is a visual artist and qualified art teacher who loves experimentation and often incorporates collage in her work. Recent themes in her artworks play with abstraction and explore her delight in her local community as “My Place”.

Every Friday morning Leanne also holds painting sessions for adults, with an intimate group of artists who work freely and hone their skills in a purpose-built, creative environment.
